But this time was to be different.
As we (the parents) walked briskly and the kids not being carried ran ahead to escape the frigid near zero temperatures, I was not all that startled to hear a loud crying coming from in front of me. As is part of the usual routine, I assumed that either Nicholas had beaten Olivia in the 'race' they were having to the doors, thus sending her into loud complaints, or Nicholas had stuck out his foot as Olivia ran by, thus sending her to the ground and into hysterics, or Olivia had cheated and Nic was now wailing loudly of her injustice. Something quite usual...I was certain.
But I was wrong.
Instead, I looked up to see Nicholas running, with what appeared to be genuine tears of pain towards his dad. "What's going on?", I asked, as I was still many feet away. No reply as Chad looked closely at the hysterical Nicholas' face. "What happened?", I ask again..."Did he fall?"
Chad was still very unresponsive, but he looked over his shoulder with what did not appear a genuine look of concern or sympathy. He pointed instead to the flag pole.
Oh no he didn't. Our son, the future president of the United States, did not just stick his tongue on the flag pole. He didn't, really Chad, say he did not.
But the hidden smirk on Chad's face said it all. He did. He really did.
And boy did it stick. Obviously Nicholas was able to rip it off of the pole, but not without leaving many layers and skin cells behind. His tongue and lip were bleeding and he was frantic.
After many attempts at calming him and many trips to the water fountain, and after many questions like, "Will I bleed to death, mom?", I was able to ask him what on earth he was thinking. His response, "I juss wanthed to sthee if it wasth tru. If thyou stickth your tongue twoth a flag pole, would ith stickth...and ith does."

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! There is one in every family! I can just see Cooper doing that one day. Hope he is alright and I know he got lots of extra lovin and huggin!!!! Poor boy.
HA!!!!! It's not funny that he got hurt, but HA!!!!!
He could be the president now. I'm sure when nobody is looking, Bush does the same thing. ;)
poor little guy! but at the same time that's hilarious!!!
I feel so bad that this made me laugh out loud!! :)
A painful learning experience.
Future President? With his antics, more like a sit-com star.
At least Nicholas AND Olivia didn't try that stunt.
Oh, my GOODNESS!!
Well, sometimes experimenting is the best solution, maybe not in this case, but I bet he doesn't do it again!
I feel bad that I was laughing so hard!
Oh.My.Goodness.
So who taught him that???
You know when I was a kid I was licking a ice cycle that I got hanging off the roof (that my dad told me not to do) and when I licked it it stuck to my tongue!! But I ran in the house and we ran water over it and it came loose without all the pain!! I was probably older or maybe it was because I was a girl and I didn't panic as quick!! Of course, he couldn't take to pole with him--now could he!! LOL but my tongue hurts for him!! Mom and Gram
Oh, Heidi! Haven't your children watched "A Christmas Story" and learned from it that it IS really true?!?! Yikes, that sounds so painful. Look at the bright side, now you have that out of the way. None of your other children will ever try it because they have learned their lesson through Nick. I hope he heals quickly.
HAHAHAH! I am laughing so hard right now! Seriously, even as old as I am...I'm still tempted to try it on a cold winter day!
OH my that is funny. Poor guy.
I hope that he is feeling better.
Oh no he didn't!?!?! That is a fear of mine....that one of my children will try this. I would not put it by Gage for a second.
Poor Nic, no teeth and a wounded tongue? Oh my.
Oh, Heidi! That is hilarious!
Poor baby--that must have been a painful lesson! :)
I hope you don't mind that I used your story as a teachable "moment" with my kids. After I told them about it and reminded them never to do it.. my Nicholas replied "mom, you wouldn't believe how many times I have thought about doing that!" - Ugh!!
OMG!!! None of my kids have ever done it. They may have licked a battery or two, but not a flag pole. I think I may have told them that they would be stuck there until spring, because there would be no way I'd come to their rescue.
I can't believe he ripped his tongue off. AAAGGGGHHHHH!!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! My tongue hurths justh thinking of it!!!! Haven't you let that boy watch "A Christmas Story?" Oh, the poor baby.
BAH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH *snort* HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH *snort* HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
If you've never seen "A Christmas Story," make sure you rent it.
Nicholas, you're too much. ;-D
First off I love the everyday behavior of your kids. Sounds like real life to me.
Poor Nicholas. I am amazed that Jenna never tried that. I'm sure even if her sisters tried it she would have to try and see what would happen. Inquiring minds want to know...
oh, that is too funny. i don't know why, but my kids never tried this. maybe because they have seen 'Christmas Story.'
I laughed out loud! Poor guy! I have one of those in my family and if it ever got cold enough here I am sure she would try it too....
OMG--that cracks me up. I am sure on one of our winter visits back to the States our UN Ambassador (aka- my 6 year old) will have to "see if it works as well". :-)
OH MY WORD!!!!!!! I am shocked!! I am not looking forward to my little guy trying all of these things out for himself. My JB certainly has this in him!! I am amazed!
Kids keep you juggling don't they? haha The adventures continue...
That is hilarious! I did that one time in grade school on the jungle gym but escaped it without alot of damage and have NEVER done it again!
You did see Courtney in the paper (if it was the PO)....she had a nice picture of her shooting the ball.
Hey, what has happened to HJWDYK?! Do we need to send out a search party?
every kid just has to find out for himself! ;-)
I laughed out loud at this. With two young boys (sigh) this could SO possibly be in my future (because heaven knows I've even wondered how true it is!!)...
oh that is just too funny.
hysterical... that's one for the baby book. ~ Kim
