I realize that our vacation plans are hardly comprehensible to the four of you. Yes, Nicholas and Olivia, you seem to grasp the notion that your dad and I will be on a big boat in the ocean along with your grandparents. And you seem to realize that you will be staying at the farm and with your Auntie Barb for a 'few' days...but beyond that it is lost to you as to what exactly will be happening in the next 10 days.
I guess that is the way of childhood innocence. Maybe that is why everything seems less frightening and more doable as a child. The childish mind just can not think of all of the unknowns, and therefore the mind and heart are free of worry, doubt, and fear. It is too bad that we lose that aspect of childhood.
I KNOW that you will be fine. I KNOW that you will flourish. I KNOW that you will be loved, cuddled, cared for and disciplined. I KNOW all of that. I really am not worried about the four of you at all. Yes, I wonder what thoughts will cloud your heads as you lay quietly at night. I wonder where Andrew will reach when he feels the need for a tummy rub. I wonder if Kate will call out for help to wipe or just forge on independently, I wonder if Olivia will miss the familiarity of our bedtime prayers together, I wonder if Nicholas will feel the heavy weight of responsibility on his shoulders because of our constant reminders to "help Grandma and Barb out with the little ones." I wonder a lot of things. But mostly I wonder how I will feel.
Of course I am excited at the thought of spending time with your dad. Time that does not revolve solely around parenting. And of course I know the necessity of such time together. Just having the long weekend together this summer reminded us both of how important it is not only for the two of us to take time apart but how vital it is to the life of our entire family for us to do so. My fears or anxiety have nothing to do with going away with your dad. They have to do with me.
I do not remember life without you guys.
I do not remember what my favorite pass time was before it was reading stories and dancing crazy in the living room after bath time.
I do not remember if I always liked chicken nuggets and fries or if I acquired that taste along with you.
I do not remember if sleeping soundly all night long really changes the quality of my life or not.
I do not remember what fashion trends thrilled me before I became so fond of the comfort of layered t-shirts, yoga pants and slippers.
I do not remember if long, hot showers relieve weary shoulders or if a hug and kiss from a toddler work just as well.
I do not remember if I ever had more than a five minute face and if it really looked any better if I did.
I do not remember if I enjoyed exercising as much on a treadmill as I do chasing after four active children.
I do not remember if my smooth skin and firm body made me sexier to my husband than my laugh lines and stretch marks that have come with motherhood.
I do not remember what it was like to walk anywhere without looking behind me and expecting to see little faces in a row following closely behind.
Some would say that I have lost myself. I have given up things that I once loved and enjoyed so that I could care for you four. I should know what I enjoy, what I love, what my dreams are. I do not think I have lost anything. I think that I have evolved. Evolved from a person who thought that lipstick and hairspray made me beautiful into a person that is beautiful because of each.one.of.you.
Being away from you for these next days, will indeed be unique. It may take me a few days to adjust to caring for the needs of just one. And I am sure that part of me will enjoy it very much. I am sure that your dad will enjoy my undivided attention for a time. I am sure that we will laugh and reminisce about a time when that was all that we knew. I am sure that we will plan to do it again. But I also know that we will come running home to hold you. To lose ourselves all over again in the beauty of being your parents.
I love you.
Mom

Oh, Heidi. I'm crying and can't think of anything else to write...
You totally nailed the experience that is motherhood. Beautiful.
You nailed it Heidi.
Have fun on your vacation!
That made me bawl like a baby.
what a beautiful post. it made my heart smile and brought tears to my eyes. thanks for sharing your heart.
Way to go, Heidi Jo!
As had been said ... you 'nailed' it, and I'm not even a parent.
Hanky, anyone?
Yes Joey, I need a hanky...my make-up is running down my face!
Heidi...that was awesome!!!
Beautiful!
And, yes, all about that "love so big" feeling! :) Glad I'm not the only crazy. :)
Heidi, that was beautiful. You def. have to put that in their baby books! I can't imagine how hard it will be to tear yourself away from them but you will come back all refreshed and ready for the next round of cleaning up after them, hugs, dancing, and just plain loving them. Have a great vacation!
Heidi, I remember the trip Dave and I took to Aruba. I had never left the girls for a long period of time and never to go out of the USA. My kids were in high school and jr high. I was in denial about even going until we got on the plane. I didn't miss them at all...really! It was so wonderful to be with my husband. Before I left I had the same feelings as you are having. I think God can really use a time like this to renew your marriage and renew your love for being a mom.
Have a blast!!!!!!!
Forgot to say...as far as losing yourself, I relish the days of being a mother to young children. Yes, I did forget along the way to look ahead to life without my girls needing me constantly. It was a huge transition when they moved away, far away. I did lose myself, but I will never regret one minute of that time in my life. I know God is bring me back slowly to finding "me" again.
Love you!
Okay tears in my eyes too. So sweet. I sooo relate. I have forgotten too but the past 8 years of childhood memories and parenting are so worth every minute.
I long for a get away with my hubby but I'd be the same way..missing the little ones.
Enjoy!!! Hopefully you'll come running back to us too. :-)
Wow, that was awesome, and I have tears in my eyes. I know the feeling. It feels so weird, yet wonderful to leave the job of mothering for a while. It IS so hard to remeber life wihtout them, huh? You'll have a great time! Enjoy it!
What a sweet post. I know exactly what you are talking about! Thanks for sharing such a heartfelt post.
THat was beautiful Heidi. You brought tears to my eyes.
I missed my kids terribly when Al and I went to Vegas for a few days.
Okay I don't know what it is like to leave my daughter for more than a day at work. Now I don't think I ever want to. LOL My husband wants to do something special for our anniversary in March. It will be 5 years I am kinda already panicing about it. I have some family members that leave their son all the time. I don't know how they do it. You did hit the nail on the head though. I would never go back to a world without all that. Enjoy your trip. But enjoy the anticipation of coming home and getting so many hugs and kiss' you won't know what to do with. Awesome post.
i'm so glad you are taking time to be alone with chad---that is so important in a marriage.
and also, how fun to come home to see the beautiful children again! have a fantastic trip and ENJOY your hubby!
xoxo

Beautiful!! Mom
My thoughts exactly! I am already thinking about when we have to leave 3 of our kids to fly across the world to get our 4th child.
I am praying for an amazing trip for you and Chad (and mom and dad too).
Your little ones will feel like they are on a vacation too, getting to spend time at the farm with cousins.
You are a wonderful mommy and this letter shows just how deeply you care for your kids.
Can't wait to see all of your tropical pictures!
Lovely letter. So very sweet.
I'm sure you're enjoying your vacation and missing your children all at the same time!
Can't wait to hear all about it! :)
To Heidi and Chad, from someone who knows your adventure has begun.
Your Uncle Dan and I will be watching over your mom & dad's "Westies" (Teddy & Daisy).
Read this when you have come home, all tanned, all warmed by the tropic sun, and all rested by the biggest fun-span on earth, and know that your Uncle, and your friends and fans (and your FAMILY) have missed you so much.
Enjoy your 'vacation' and take plenty of recriminating pics.
Your Enviable Uncle Joey
Your so cool! I love reading your blog!
What a beautiful post! Your kids are so lucky to have a mom that cares as much as you do!
I hope you have a great time with your hubby!
I hope you are having a wonderful time and I can't wait to hear all about it when you return.
However, do know that I'm extremely jealous as this very moment as I look at our temp reading 2 degrees ... and knowing you are basking in the warm sun.
WITCH!
:)
It is so cold here in Utah. It snowed again today. I thought about you and your tropical adventure.
I'm GREEN with envy, lady! Can't wait for the report.
What a fun reminder of the joys of motherhood and how it changes us (for the better!). I hope your cruise leaves you rested, pampered and energized...because I'm sure you'll need all that energy within the first 10 minutes of your return! - Kelly Hasz
Beautiful!! I feel every word!! So true and so well said!
