How do I get talked into this stuff? Seriously. The traveling "carnival", and I use that term to mean, vile, disgusting, disturbing, bacterial, atrocious, freakin' scary form of entertainment, came to town last weekend. Not a big deal to me.
My hard-working and observant husband (the carnival is set up right outside his office) came home Friday from work and said, "Hey the carnival's in town!", with an odd amount of cheerfulness, then added, "it looks pretty rough though." I responded, "The people are always creepy at that stuff, Chad." He said, "No, I mean like duct-taped up rides, creepy." I volunteered, "Well, we don't need to go then." To which he said, "Well, not that creepy."
So, we went. How bad could it really be, right? Besides, I had read just earlier that day that two very classy moms were taking their kids. And kids don't mind creepy people...that just adds some flavor. I wasn't a very enthusiastic attendee and made sure that my husband knew just how badly I opposed his attempt at family fun. He was so happy he brought me along, I could tell. Once we actually got to the carnival, even his cheerfulness seemed dim compared to the odd population and foul stenches emanating from the area.
Being a people watcher I let my eyes wander over the sea of faces looking for one familiar face that would ease the panic constricting my airways and threatening to send me into hyperventilation. Who were these people? Granted we've only lived here for two short years, and I don't get out much, but I was beginning to wonder if we had entered the twilight zone. Not the gas station clerk, not the lady that rings me up at the grocery store, not the Librarian, no local law enforcements officers, not the kids from our church youth group, not the ladies at the gym, not the book store clerk....NO ONE FAMILIAR!
"Chad, this is not a good sign...why don't we recognize anyone here?" I muttered under my breath. "Oh relax, I told you I saw Ferber here earlier," he replied.
Determined to carry on like this was another day at Disneyland, we made our way to the ticket counter. The fine young maiden running the traveling E Coli booth suggested that we purchase the 20 sheet of tickets for $15. Done.
As we browsed about at our ride options we were indecisive as to which wonder we should experience first: The Spinning Tea Cups, which used to be green but now were a lovely shade of RUST, The Spinning Apples, which we were informed by a nice young man had been the trigger to a vomiting incident just earlier that day, The Carousel, The Circling Pink Elephants, The Ferris Wheel, that only allowed four of the 12 cars to be filled, or the gas powered miniature Viking Ship...yes, lawn-mower-engine-gas-powered...the vroom, vroom noises of this one were exhilarating.
Well, ride they did. But $30 later, I was more certain than ever that this would be our last hoorah as Carnies.
*editor's note: we did run into one family that we consider friends, they were stumbling around looking as horrified as we were. in their defense, they moved here just months after we did..... thankfully they agreed to ditch the dump and meet us back at our house for a pleasant bon fire!

Ish..........that place just creeps me out. It usually drums up some business for our office while it's in town.
I really wonder how often they do safety checks on that equipment.
"The fine young maiden running the traveling E Coli booth"
LOL!
Did you see the world's tallest midget (5'6") while you were there? :-)
You've called me genius AND classy in a matter of two days. You're quickly becoming one of my most favorite people in the entire world!
Uh...did you say bomb fire?
yeah um kerrie...i have no idea what you are talking about;-)
Ok, that was some good stuff! Love the E Coli booth.
Call me snotty, but I refused to take my girls there. I got creeped out just driving by the rides!
Ha - love it! Maybe I should be relieved that they were shut down when we arrived there on Thursday.
Carnie people, gotta love them! YUCK! I don't even bring the kids on this side of town when the carnival is here. They are always set up in the mall parking lot which is right outside of the bank. So we get to examine what kind of junker rides they have and the icky people running the rides. I do love your descriptive words though. You hit the nail on the head with those!!!
HAHAHA! We are alike in so many ways! And Robb would have been just like Chad....so funny! What did the kids think of it all?
Glad to know I am not the only snobby mom that keeps her kids far away from traveling carnivals! :)
That sounds like fun...I guess I'm spoiled living so close to Hershey and HersheyPark - where they give away free chocolate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This weekend we had the traveling Ribfest. They also have all of the inflatables for kid but no carny rides. It has always bothered me that you trust life and limb on a ride that is taken down and reassembled in another town in a matter of hours (Not to mention the salt of the earth operators).
Our ribfest is a good time, a couple of bucks to get in, jungle gym and a petting zoo for the girls, complete with beer, lemonade, and Everclear (the band). Yeah and Joe Diffie performed on Sat.
ducked tape rides! LOL!
yeah, just looking at the people that set those things up is enough to send me running in the opposite direction.
wow, you were a good sport.
You couldn't pay me enough to take my kid to that particular "carnival." ICK!
You are hilarious! You had quite the evening of fun. I'm a bit jealous.
Wow,
After reading your account, I'm kinda glad we didn't have any carnivals around when I was growing up in Ventura County. The carnival came to Moorpark after I was long-gone adult.
I did like the county faires, though. Strange foods and lots of livestock to check out. Just stay away from the 'carny' booths and rides, please.
U.A.
Sounds like the Tyler fair where the you could get $2 off the ticket price if you brought a canned good. Interesting place forsure!
Michelle F. went to the Tyler fair?!! What was she thinking!! : )
I'm so with you. I hate those places—didn't realize I was in such good company with all your commenters though.
You're a great writer—somehow I felt as though I was there.
I am not sure if I would consider myself a classy mom. I admit taking my child to these wonderful events whenever possible (sigh). Although after this year...not real sure if I will do it again. What in the world is the VFW or Lions Club or whoever thinking when they bring them here! UGH! I think my husband SPECIFICALLY "warned" Chad about the carnival when he was there checking things out. Mark knew you were all doomed when Chad said "it looks like fun"
To make it even worse, it sounds like you bought your tickets at the carnival. You can always get them cheaper at Jubilee. I believe they were 24 for 10 dollars.
The Izaac Walton League (sp) sponsors it, and unless it improves our family will not be going again, either.
Carnivals - the petri dishes of society.
My husband and one of my best friends love them! Her husband and I HATE THEM. So we inevitably go together. Argh. I hate carnivals so I feel you on this one. Very funny discription!
I agree the carnival was a joke. A whole two or three rides for kids age.
